These races carry no GPS. We read the splits instead.

Badwater, Western States, UTMB: no GPS. The races publish split times at official checkpoints, sometimes 40 miles apart. That is the only official data.

We turn those splits into live positions, so you can watch the race unfold between stations.

You know who is in front. You have no idea where they are twenty minutes later.

The first checkpoint tells you who leads. Twenty minutes later that is history. For fans that is boring; for a crew parked at the next station it is the whole problem.

Three inputs, recalibrated at every checkpoint

Position between checkpoints is estimated using three inputs:

• Historical pace for the segment, from prior years' medians.
• The runner's form today, against their own average.
• A hard reset at every checkpoint: the real split replaces the estimate.

Backtested against archived races: mean error is roughly one mile. Runners sharing an estimated position render as one pack marker, not invented separation.

What we will not do

We do not invent data. No confirmed split means no rank, no projected finish, no average pace.

Estimates answer one question: roughly where is this runner right now. Not precise. Honest.

They hold because ultrarunners pace steadily over familiar terrain. They break in extreme conditions or when a runner changes strategy, and the next checkpoint corrects them.
